What Happens If I Forget My Password?

Important information about password recovery with zero-knowledge encryption. Why CipherWrite cannot reset your password.

This is critical to understand: Because CipherWrite uses zero-knowledge encryption, we cannot reset or recover your password.

  • We cannot decrypt your data
  • We cannot generate a new key
  • We cannot recover your writing

What you should do: 1. Choose a strong, memorable password — use a passphrase like "correct-horse-battery-staple" 2. Write it down and store it in a physical safe place 3. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) to store it securely 4. Export your writing regularly as PDF or Markdown backups

This is by design. The fact that we can't recover your password is what makes CipherWrite truly secure. If we could reset it, that would mean we have a backdoor — and so would anyone who compromises our systems.
